Everton take significant transfer step as Marcel Brands freed to recruit 'elite quality'

Terry McAllister, Walton

The transfer window is closed across Europe and the Everton rot is almost entirely gone.

Next summer will be the first in a long time that a dozen or so forgotten players don’t report back to Finch Farm for pre-season.

Marcel Brands may find himself free to recruit in smaller numbers at a more elite quality without the financial drag that he’s had to deal with so far as sporting director.

The Dutchman inherited a squad of 35 senior professionals when he arrived with half of those well below the standard required to compete in the Premier League.

The work done to bring that number down and upcycle the team since then has been nothing short of remarkable.

The serious business of replacing the weaker first teamers can now begin and players like Schneiderlin, Walcott and Tosun should probably start thinking about their next career moves after this season.

To get the three points on Sunday was a massive boost.

Lose or draw and it would have been an awful start to the season.

The win and attacking manner of it could be a springboard to better things this season.

The inclusions of Delph and Iwobi to the starting line-up improved us greatly and gave us an edge going forward we hadn’t seen so far.

The signing of Iwobi did not at the time fill me with much joy but from what we’ve seen so far I may have massively underestimated him. He is even scoring headers.

The defence at times did look shaky against a decent Wolves attack but they were the first home goals we have conceded in a long time.

The work-rate of Richarlison and knack of scoring make him quite rightly our most valuable asset. He had not started the season brilliantly but he shone on Sunday and without him we are not as likely to score. Besides any player who can get an Oasis song into his chant is alright by me.

Keep on, keeping on.

It was a great win for the Blues against a very good Wolves side on Sunday. It was a very entertaining game to watch with both sides having plenty of chances.

Sigurdsson had a very good game and provided a great cross for Iwobi to score his first goal at Goodison Park. Iwobi and Richarlison also had great games out wide.

We now have so much pace up front with these two and Kean, it is great to watch!

Delph was the star man, though, controlling the midfield, winning tackles and playing good passes to help move the team forward. He could be the new Gareth Barry!

It is now a boring international break then we have a winnable away game at Bournemouth.

We need to start winning away from home to give us a good chance of challenging for the top six.

Two games played and two victories secured.

Everton have bounced back in the best way possible to defeat at Aston Villa a couple of weeks ago.

A lot was made about the defeat to Dean Smith’s side, but the manner in which we have bounced back is more than pleasing.

The character, grit and determination we have showed in our last two outings should leave all Evertonians smiling.

Sunday’s win was hard-fought to say the least, but at the same time it was exactly what we needed heading into the international break.

Going forward was as good as I have witnessed from us in a long time. We looked sharp and I loved the amount of times we got the ball wide and looked to put crosses into the box.

And in the end, we got our rewards. Sunday’s win now needs to be the benchmark for the rest of the season.
