Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin backs Raheem Sterling after Montenegro racism row

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has backed Raheem Sterling England players were subject to racist abuse in Montenegro earlier this week.

Gareth Southgate's side secured a 5-1 win in their second match of the international break, in which Everton man Michael Keane bagged his first goal for his country.

However, the game was marred by racist chanting from sections of the home support - with UEFA subsequently charging Montenegro with racist behaviour.

Sterling bagged the Three Lions' fifth goal on the night and celebrated by cupping his ears to the home supporters, and that move has now been backed by Calvert-Lewin.

The Everton striker, who has been on England U21s duty over the international break, believes the Manchester City winger answered critics in the best possible way.

"Of course there's no place for racism in the game," Calvert-Lewin told Sky Sports.

"Raheem is a top player and he's on flames at the moment and there's no better way to answer that kind of criticism than to score goals and celebrate the way he did.

"I had a big smile across my face when he did that, so I'm over the moon for him."
