Everton pair suffer fresh injury blow as Duncan Ferguson makes bleak recovery prediction

Duncan Ferguson has confirmed that Tyler Onyango has returned to Everton after undergoing an operation for a hamstring picked up while playing for Forest Green Rovers.

Onyango initially started the season at Burton Albion, but was recalled by the Blues in January before joining Ferguson’s side on transfer deadline day. The midfielder, who is under contract at Everton until June 2025, made 24 appearances in all competitions for the Brewers.

The England youth international made his Forest Green debut in Ferguson’s first game in charge, a last-gasp 2-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town, before going on to play the full 90 minutes against Peterborough United a week later.

However, it was in Forest Green’s next match, away to Morecambe, when Onyango picked up his injury. Speaking after his side's 1-1 draw at the Mazuma Stadium, Ferguson admitted he thought the knock was a bad one.

He said: “It looks a bad one. We’ll get it scanned in the morning but it looks bad to be honest.”

And speaking to the ECHO following his side’s 2-1 defeat to Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium on Saturday, Ferguson revealed that Onyango has returned to Everton to continue his post surgical rehabilitation and he doesn't expect the 20-year-old to return to The New Lawn this season.

He said: “He’s back at Everton. He got an operation and he is back there rehabilitating.

“His season, for me, well I don’t know 100%, but I would be surprised if he is back at Forest Green this year. I don’t expect to see him back this season.”

Meanwhile, Ryan Astley is on crutches after picking up an ankle injury while playing for Accrington Stanley last month. The Welsh youth international picked up the knock during his side’s 3-0 defeat to Lincoln City.

Astley joined Stanley on loan for the season during the summer transfer window. He had made 34 appearances in all competitions before picking up his injury.

The defender was in attendance to watch John Coleman’s side in action on Saturday and the ECHO understands there are no plans in place for the 21-year-old to return to Everton before the conclusion of his loan as Stanley are hopeful he can return to action before the season ends.
