Everton morning headlines as interest in Atletico Madrid defender confirmed and five leaving named

Here are yourEverton morning headlines on Tuesday, September 22.

Everton in talks with Atleti defender Arias

Everton are one of three clubs in talks with Atletico Madrid defender Santiago Arias, according to the Spanish club’s sporting director.

Roma and Paris Saint-Germain have also held discussions over a move for the Colombian, who joined Atleti from PSV Eindhoven in 2018.

The Blues have had a busy transfer window with James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Allan and Niels Nkounkou all added to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

“We’re talking to Roma, Everton and PSG,” Atletico sporting director Andrea Berta told Kicker .

Atletico are believed to want around €15million (£13.75m) for Arias, who Everton director of football Marcel Brands signed during his time at PSV.

Blues must target Wembley final - Ball

Former Everton defender Michael Ball believes the club must target a place in this year’s Carabao Cup final after a promising start to the season.

The Blues face Fleetwood Town on Wednesday night after winning their first three games of the new campaign, including Saturday’s impressive 5-2 defeat of West Bromwich Albion.

And Ball believes that Wednesday’s trip to Highbury is ‘massive’ if Everton are to win a piece of silverware in Ancelotti’s first full season in charge.

Royal Blue: Brazilian legend Rivaldo explains why he sees 'great' things for Everton

“Especially with other teams doing well around us and spending a lot of money, we've got a chance to hopefully get fans back in and reward them with a trip to Wembley,” wrote Ball in his ECHO column .

“It's still early days yet, and the sad thing is that the fans aren't there to see the quality we've brought in so far, but hopefully that will happen sooner rather than later.

“This match is massive in my opinion.”

Unsworth expects loans for young stars

Everton Under-23 manager David Unsworth says he expects five players to leave the club on loan before the transfer deadline.

Callum Connolly, Beni Baningime, Dennis Adeniran, Nathan Broadhead and Josh Bowler all started the under-23s’ 3-0 win over Leicester City on Monday, with several Football League scouts in attendance at Southport.

Connolly and Bowler both found the back of the net alongside Ellis Simms in a convincing win for the young Blues.

"They're not here playing because we're hand-picking them," Unsworth exclusively told the ECHO .

"We want them to go out on loan and giving them a game in the u-23s gives them a showcase to get that loan.

"Dennis, Beni, Nathan, Josh, Callum, they are all players I expect to be out on loan but the loan [window] is a little bit later so I understand why clubs haven't taken them yet.

"It'll probably be last-minute for most of them but I certainly expect all of them to go out on loan. On tonight's performance they have certainly shown they are top young players."
