Everton handed Champions League omen as remarkable Andros Townsend stat emerges

Everton's bright start to the 2021/22 season continues.

Overcoming injuries to key members of the first-team, Rafael Benitez's side battled back from a goal down to secure a share of the spoils against Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

This result leaves the Blues fourth in the league standings after seven matches played and only two points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.

Everton's tally of 14 points is also the highest return generated after seven games since the 2004/05 season - the last time the Blues made it into the Champions League places.

Supporters will now be dreaming of what can be achieved this campaign with a side displaying all the right qualities of a team capable of competing at the top end of the division.

Demarai Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure shone once again for the Toffees, but it was Andros Townsend's finish that earned Everton a point at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old has been a revelation since arriving on a free transfer in the summer, having been directly involved in eight goals in his first nine matches for the club.

Townsend was not renowned for his goalscoring ability at any of his former sides, but showcased his ruthless side at the home of the Red Devils after coolly slotting past David de Gea to level the scores.

He has now scored five goals in nine appearances for the Blues, the same number he managed in his final 79 games for Crystal Palace.

Townsend has also matched his Premier League goalscoring tally for former side Tottenham Hotspur (3), which was reached across four seasons and 50 first-team appearances.

Only Jamie Vardy, Mohamed Salah and Michail Antonio have had more goal involvements than the London-born winger in the Premier League this season, highlighting the talismanic role he has taken up in the Everton side.
