Everton fan confronts referee after goal disallowed as bottle thrown at Jurgen Klopp

An Everton fan stormed the Goodison Park pitch amid the aftermath of the Toffees' ruled-out goal against Liverpool, whilst Jurgen Klopp had a bottle thrown at him in a fiery Merseyside derby.

Conor Coady thought he had given Frank Lampard's men the lead midway through the second period on Merseyside as he tapped home from close range - the former Red celebrating wildly alongside the vast majority of the stadium. However, those celebrations were quickly cut short with VAR ruling that the on-loan Wolves star was marginally offside as he fired in Neal Maupay's low cross.

That then saw the atmosphere within Goodison Park change as a number of supporters took exception to the decision. A couple even signalled their discontent by overstepping the mark.

One particular fan stormed the pitch from the Gwladys Street End to confront referee Anthony Taylor. Liverpool midfielder Fabinho made sure to get in the way before the disgruntled supporter was very quickly removed by stewards.

Another then went even further by hurling a bottle from behind the benches in the direction of Liverpool schemer Jurgen Klopp. Fortunately, the missile narrowly avoided the German coach.

Everton legend Peter Reid said of that incident: “There’s no need for that. We don’t want that. Whatever happens in a football match, there is no way that behaviour should ever be condoned.

“It’s an absolute disgrace. We’re all better than that. This is a hard-fought game, a fierce rivalry, but that is an absolute embarrassment to our football club.”

The clash with their Merseyside rivals was not the first time that Goodison Park has seen a Premier League game halted by individuals invading the pitch. Everton's home clash with Newcastle in March was halted by a protestor, who then tied themself to the goalpost.

Additionally, Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira was involved in an unsavoury incident with an Everton fan as the home supporters invaded the pitch after their win against the Eagles - a victory that all but secured their Premier League survival at the end of last season. The club ended up being charged with two breaches of the FA's rules due to the incidents, with fans also taking to the pitch shortly after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's winning goal against Palace.

Lampard toasted the celebrating Everton fans and insisted those that did not overstep the mark were fully justified. He said: "They're [the scenes] just incredible. Bring it on people who want to say: 'Celebrating staying up'.

"You know what - it means so much to the people at this club, the players, the board and everybody. And also the circumstances of being 2-0 down to win 3-2 - people won't forget this. Everton fans won't forget this.

“Evertonians will say: 'This happens, this is the way we do things, that's very Everton'. They can say these things but to do it, to practically do it as players is a special night. The scenes are well deserved for everybody."

It of course remains to be seen whether the governing body elects to take any action due to the latest incidents.

In the end, the Toffees were not able to overcome their great rivals as the game finished 0-0.

Goalkeepers Jordan Pickford and Alisson Becker were the standouts throughout the game as they managed to keep out a number of chances throughout the game.
