Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti might want to avoid buying a striker in January - and this is why

Carlo Ancelotti is ready to add to his Everton squad in January.

The new Toffees boss will hold talks with the board after the Merseyside derby as he looks to improve his squad, but he might want to think twice about signing a striker.

Forwards signed in January tend to be a bit of a damp squib.

Everton have had their fingers burnt before. Cenk Tosun has struggled since arriving two seasons ago and Theo Walcott has had a mixed career at Goodison Park. The less said about Oumar Niasse, the better.

In total, Premier League clubs have brought in 34 strikers on a permanent basis over the last five January transfer windows.

Those players clocked up a combined 19,616 minutes of league football by the end of the season, the equivalent of 218 games.

They scored a combined total of just 64 goals in that time.

That’s equivalent to one goal for every 307 minutes on the pitch - hardly prolific.

A total of 13 players failed to score for their new club between signing in January and the end of the season.

Another seven players scored just once, while four scored twice.

That works out as 71% of forwards and strikers signed in January failing to score more than twice by the end of the season.

There are, of course, exceptions.

Gabriel Jesus scored seven league goals in 10 appearances in his first season with Manchester City.

That works out at one goal every 93 minutes which is more prolific than any other forward signed in the last five Januaries.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, meanwhile, scored 10 goals in 13 games at the rate of one every 106 minutes between January and the end of the season when he signed for Arsenal in 2018.
