Evening Standard Comment: Bishopsgate Streetspace scheme has become a vital safer cycling route in the City

Horse-drawn carriages versus pedestrians, cars against cyclists — the history of London is littered with competing claims for limited space on its roads.

It is in this tradition that a consultation has today been launched by Transport for London on retaining the controversial pop-up “Streetspace” scheme in Bishopsgate, which has become a vital safer cycling route in the City.

The project involved widening pavements but has been bitterly opposed by the black cab trade. TfL points out the changes have boosted bus reliability and reduced journey times. It also says that thanks to the changes, journeys have become safer for both pedestrians and cyclists.

As Covid restrictions continue to lift and Londoners return to the office, we welcome schemes that make it easier and quicker to get around the capital while encouraging drivers to get out of their cars.

Battle for The Wolseley

The Wolseley is no mere restaurant. In just under two decades, it has become something of a London institution after its founders, Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, sympathetically restored a stately former car showroom down from the Ritz to become a continental-style restaurant, open from breakfast to after-theatre suppers.

Now the majority shareholders of Corbin and King have put the company into administration, saying it cannot meet its financial obligations. The Wolseley founders say they will fight to reverse the move.

We wish them well. Those Londoners who feel strongly about the perfect omelette Arnold Bennett or the perfect Martini have much to lose It is not threatened with closure, but with a change of management and character. And that would be a pity.
