A painting put up for auction after its owner learned of its possible value in the Edinburgh Evening News exceeded expectations when it sold at the weekend for almost £250,000, a world record price for the artist, Leslie Hunter. The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was prompted to contact the auctioneers after seeing a story in the News about another Hunter being likely to attract £70,000. The still life is in the classic Dutch tradition, depicting a silver coffee pot and salver, wine glass, and mixed fruit. It was purchased directly from the artist around 1920 and has never been exhibited. Hunter, one of the Scottish Colourists, died in 1931. (Via The Scotsman)
