'Eurovision Express' to run from Manchester Airport to Liverpool during strike

A 'Eurovision Express' train service has been announced from Manchester Airport to Liverpool Lime Street tomorrow

The service will accommodate the large numbers of Eurovision superfans flooding into the city for the hotly-anticipated final. The new service will coincide with strike action by ASLEF, the train drivers union, following its rejection of a "risible" pay offer of 4% last month.

Tricia Williams, chief operating officer at Northern, said: “As a Liverpudlian myself, I know how proud the city is to have been chosen to host the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of the people of Ukraine.

“International events of this calibre are a real boost to the region and so it was disappointing to see the return of industrial action and the disruption that brings to passengers.

“On this occasion, we thought it important to ensure international visitors that have made the journey across Europe to support their country’s representative could still get those last few miles over to Merseyside for the final.

“We expect all services to be at or near capacity from the point they leave Manchester Airport, which is why we’ve made the decision to run them ‘express’ from the city to Liverpool Lime Street.”

The hourly service, provided by train operators in partnership with Network Rail, will run from 7am until 7pm tomorrow.

Strike action will continue to impact on other services, however, as Northern has announced that none of its usual trains will run tomorrow, May 31 and June 3.

Limited Northern services will be available on Saturday, May 13, with travellers being advised to check timetables and plan their journeys ahead of time.

Disruption is also expected from May 15 to 20, and on June 1.
