Eurostar to upgrade its trains to cope with extreme European heatwaves

  • Eurostar is preparing for unprecedented heat across Europe by upgrading its new fleet of trains to withstand temperatures of up to 55C.
  • The decision follows intense heatwaves, including a record-breaking 37.7C in the UK, prompting Eurostar to enhance the air conditioning capabilities of its new trains.
  • The international rail operator upgraded its order with French manufacturer Alstom for up to 50 new double-decker all-electric “Celestia” trains.
  • Originally, the new trains were specified with air conditioning capable of operating up to 45C, but this has been increased to 55C to future-proof the fleet.
  • These new trains are expected to enter service in 2031 and run into the 2060s, with Eurostar's chief executive stating the upgrade is a necessary investment for their long lifespan.
