Euros final referee: Bjorn Kuipers to officiate England vs Italy at Wembley

Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers has been awarded the task of refereeing Sunday’s Euro 2020 final between England and Italy.

The 48-year-old was in charge when Italy beat England 2-1 during the group stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but is yet to referee either side in this tournament.

He was, however, the fourth official for England’s win over Croatia in the group stage, and will become the first Dutchman to referee a European Championship final.

Sunday’s Wembley showpiece will be his fourth match of the tournament after the Denmark v Belgium and Slovakia v Spain group games and the quarter-final between Denmark and the Czech Republic.

Kuipers has previously refereed the Champions League final, in 2014, as well as the Europa League final twice.

This is his third European Championship and he has also officiated at two World Cups. He was in charge for England’s World Cup quarter-final victory over Sweden in Russia in 2018.

The assistant referees will be fellow Dutchmen Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra, while Carlos Del Cerro Grande of Spain will be the fourth official. Germany’s Bastian Dankert will be the video assistant referee.
