Esther McVey is rightfully binned from Tory leadership race but Boris Johnson is much bigger problem

Esther McVey is the lowest of the low, even among a poll of Tories.

When your own side rates you this poorly, it’s time for some calm reflection.

But with McVile, that’s unlikely.

Instead, she’s more likely to blame a “cabal of lefties” or some other nonsense to explain her failure.

This was the government minister who came to Scotland to say the rape clause offered victims an extra chance for support.

This is a minister so assured of her own superiority that she actually thought she could be Prime Minister.

Lorraine Kelly spoke for everyone when she brutally dismissed McVey on TV this week.

And yesterday, just nine Tory MPs – including herself – gave their vote to McVey for party leader.

Boris Johnson is well out ahead after the first round of voting in the Roy leadership race (PA)

Frankly, that’s nine too many.

Now, she’s on a scrapheap with fellow no-hopers Mark Harper and Andrea Leadsom.

So far, so good. But McVey’s removal does nothing to stop the much bigger problem coming over the horizon.

Boris Johnson got more than 100 votes and is clear favourite to be imposed upon the UK as the next Prime Minister.

It’s a cabal of right-wingers that are in charge of our future.

It’s going to take more than a bracing putdown from Lorraine Kelly to stop BoJo.

Common sense

Addiction expert Dr Gabor Mate is respected across the world for his groundbreaking thinking.

And he’s also known for talking a great deal of sense.

Now, the psychologist has blasted the UK Government’s refusal to green-light a safe injection facility in Glasgow as “pure political opportunism”.

Dr Mate has seen firsthand the benefits of similar measures in Canada. They save lives, reduce crime and make radical improvements to society.

The Scottish Government and the NHS are behind the Glasgow plan. It’s just the UK Government, which is blocking it.

The Conservatives are a party with an array of drug takers running for leader while refusing common-sense measures to help addicts.

Nothing sums up the state of British politics better than that.

Spectacular city

Simon Murphy’s photography career has taken him around the world.

But he had to come home to Glasgow to find his favourite subjects.

He’s about to publish a new collection focusing on the city’s Govanhill area in all its diverse splendour.

It’s like the old slogan – Glasgow smiles better.
