Estate agents reopen as the housing market set to restart

New rules put place by the UK government will allow house moves and viewings to return from today - but only in England.

Yesterday saw the extension of the coronavirus furlough scheme up until October - but the housing market is among a collection of sectors that have been given the greet light to resume.

Throughout lockdown, buyers and renters had been urged to delay any potential move. The government estimated around closed to half a million moves had been affected, which equates to a total monetary value of £82bn.

Now, under newly instated regulations, estate and letting agents are being allowed to reopen with Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick saying those that "waited patiently to move can now do so".

While the news will be welcomed by many, it does come contingent on new conditions. The changes will also not come into effect in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland where the property market remains closed.

New measures will include being able to view properties along with an agent with the relevant social distancing guidelines in place.

Jenrick said: "I am announcing new guidelines to allow the housing market to resume."

"Our clear plan will enable people to move home safely, covering each aspect of the sales and letting process from viewings to removals."

"This critical industry can now safely move forward," Jenrick continued, "and those waiting patiently to move can now do so."
