ESPN Taps Scott Van Pelt to Host Monday Night Football Countdown

Changes continue in ESPN amid the on-air layoffs, and the company has reportedly made a decision on one of its key open roles.

The Walt Disney Co. (DIS) -) sports network is assigning longtime “SportsCenter” host Scott Van Pelt to lead “Monday Night Countdown,” ESPN’s pregame show for its primetime NFL broadcast, according to a report by The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch.

Van Pelt will be replacing Suzy Kolber, who was part of a group of about 20 on-air talents that were laid off by ESPN in late June.

Van Pelt was the host of the midnight edition of “SportsCenter” since 2015, but has been with ESPN carrying different roles for over two decades. One of his most prominent roles was as a golf correspondent covering the various major golf tournaments.

The iconic "SportsCenter" news format of ESPN had been slowing down in recent years, but SVP, as Van Pelt is known, has helped boost the late night edition in recent years. Viewership for "SportsCenter with Scott Van Pelt" saw a 45% year-on-year increase in the first two months of 2023.

NFL Live Host Laura Rutledge was another finalist for the position, according to the New York Post.
