Escaped prisoner had 26 weeks left in custody as manhunt enters second day

The hunt for a prisoner who escaped from custody while on a hospital trip has entered a second day.

Patrick Garrett has now been on the run for more than 24 hours after he 'slipped his cuffs' on Wednesday morning.

His disappearance has sparked a manhunt by Merseyside Police and an internal probe at G4S, the firm that runs the jail where he was an inmate.

Garrett was on a medical visit to Aintree Hospital when he managed to escape his escort.

The 30-year-old was being held at Altcourse prison, in Fazakerley, after being locked up in July 2019 for aggravated unauthorised taking of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving.

He had been freed on licence, but was back inside after breaching his released conditions.

His term was set to end in September.

Appealing for information, a Merseyside Police spokesman said on Wednesday: “An investigation is currently underway, witnesses are being spoken to and CCTV and other enquiries are being carried out.

“I would appeal to anyone who has seen 30 year-old Patrick Garrett, who is originally from the Vauxhall area of Liverpool, or who knows of his whereabouts to not approach him directly but to call 999 immediately."

G4S described Garrett as "low risk".

Steve Williams, director of HMP Altcourse, said: "Merseyside Police have been notified and this incident will be subject to a thorough investigation.

"Absconds are rare and when they do occur we work closely with the police to recapture them and return them to tougher, closed conditions."
