Erik ten Hag to Man Utd: Ajax fans give mixed verdicts on Dutch boss's Premier League move

Ajax fans appear to have mixed opinions about the possibility of Erik ten Hag becoming the next Manchester United manager.

The Ajax boss is expected to be announced as the next United coach in the coming weeks, replacing interim manager Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season. Rangnick will start a two-year consultancy gig when his temporary contact expires.

Ten Hag is refusing to answer questions about the United job, as English reporters were banned from his post-match press conference on Saturday evening. Yet Ajax fans were more than happy to discuss the possibility of saying goodbye to their manager.

"I'm very disappointed actually that I hear he's almost leaving - it's almost a done deal with Manchester United," one supporter told Sky Sports News. "I'm crying from the inside... I'm very sorry to lose him. I think he was one of the greatest coaches we've ever had."

But another said: "It's good for Ten Hag and I think also good for Ajax. After five, six years it's good to see what we can do with another trainer. New trainer... I think it will work."

On whether Ten Hag will be a success at OId Trafford, one fan said: "It might take some time, but I think if he can be given the resources that he needs to be given - and be given the leverage to do what he wants to do with the club - I think he can achieve."

While another added: "He's already a success, but I'm not sure if it's going to be a success at Manchester United. He is a different person. You [United] need an ego - you don't need Ten Hag."

Ten Hag has won two Eredivisie, two Dutch Cups and the Dutch Super Cup since he was appointed Ajax manager in December 2017. He was denied the chance to add a third title to his collection when the 2019-20 campaign was cancelled due to the Covid pandemic.

Ajax are on course to win the league and cup double this season. They're currently seven points clear of PSV Eindhoven in second having played a game more and take on the same opponent in the Dutch Cup final later this month.

Ajax winger Steven Berghuis - who's played for Watford - has revealed what it's like to play under Ten Hag. "I have not been with Ajax that long, but if you see what this manager has achieved with the squad for almost four-and-half years, it is incredible," he said.

"Look at the average number of points and two Champions League campaigns. It is all so impressive. It will become a massive challenge for the new manager, but also for the club if he leaves. What you can see right now is that Ten Hag’s signature is all over this Ajax side."

Berghuis added: "The coach explains most of what he wants to tell his players on the basis of video material, both in the team analysis and also individually. Everyone receives an explanation about what is being asked and what this manager would like to see in each position."
