Erik ten Hag makes bold Manchester United dressing room claim about dealing with 'fierce' criticism

Erik ten Hag has reassured fans criticism of players 'should never' influence his Manchester United dressing room.

United have equalled their longest trophy drought for 40 years and they've failed to qualify for the Champions League this term. The Reds will play Europa League or Conference League football next season and Ten Hag has admitted that's 'painful'.

Ten Hag has joined United on a three-year contract with the option of an additional year and he'll be aiming to take United back into the Champions League in his first season. Ten Hag will take over at United once Ralf Rangnick has managed his final game.

Ten Hag spoke extensively about the challenges ahead at Old Trafford in the Dutch media at the weekend and he was asked about how his side will deal with criticism under his leadership, with United's players receiving unprecedented scrutiny this campaign.

The 52-year-old reassured supporters with his answer, outlining that outside criticism should never influence his dressing room.

"That has an impact, but it should never have an influence in the dressing room," Ten Hag told De Telegraaf.

"Maybe the criticism is fiercer there. The club simply has a bigger fan base and more reach than Ajax, because England is much bigger, the Premier League is much bigger and basically everything is much bigger.

“Compared to the Netherlands it's factor two, three, four or maybe even more. Fortunately, I've been getting more and more baggage on how to deal with certain forces.’’
