Erik ten Hag 'lines up' next Man Utd star to follow Cristiano Ronaldo out exit door

Erik ten Hag is reportedly preparing to wave goodbye to Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old right-back is being lined up by Manchester United to follow Cristiano Ronaldo through the exit door, having become surplus to requirements over the course of this season. Red Devils boss Ten Hag has handed Wan-Bissaka just four minutes of football since he took charge this summer and heavily favoured the in-form Diogo Dalot on the right of his four-man defence.

With Ronaldo's £480,000 contract terminated and an acrimonious departure confirmed, United are continuing to rebuild their squad and the former Crystal Palace star looks sets to be next in line to head out of Old Trafford.

The Telegraph report that Ten Hag is keen to offload Wan-Bissaka and sign a new right-back in January. Dalot's form have made it a difficult year for the £50million man, a fee which the Red Devils are unlikely to see recouped in any sale.

On a contract which runs until 2024, Wan-Bissaka earns a reported £90,000 per week - another figure which will likely reduce at a new destination. Ex-club Palace signalled their interest during the summer transfer window but were only keen to bring back their academy graduate on loan, as opposed to re-signing him in a permanent deal.

Ten Hag recently welcomed the Croydon-born defender back into his squad following a period on the sidelines but didn't give him any minutes before the Red Devils broke off for the World Cup. Earlier this month, the United manager discussed Wan-Bissaka's predicament and suggested that he wanted to keep him for the remainder of the campaign.

Have your say! Which right-back should Man Utd sign to replace Wan-Bissaka? Let us know in the comments section.

"Aaron Wan-Bissaka, he struggled as well, but in a different side," Ten Hag explained after naming him on the bench for United's 1-0 victory over Real Sociedad in the Europa League. "Some injuries, some illnesses, so he was also often not available, but he doesn't have a real big problem. It's about him [getting] really fit and to make competition with Diogo for the second half of the season."

If he does leave, however, who could the Red Devils bring in as a replacement? Keen to bring in an attack-minded successor, Barcelona 's Sergino Dest - who's currently representing the United States of America at the World Cup - has been tipped for a reunion with Ten Hag following their successful period working together at Ajax.

Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier - who Barcelona were likely to make a move for had they sold Dest over the summer - is an option. The Belgium international, 31, boasts a vastly different profile to 22-year-old Dest, who's more technically gifted but lacks the monstrous physicality which the 6ft 3in Meunier possesses.
