Erik ten Hag issues Cristiano Ronaldo update amid quit rumours and Chelsea transfer talks

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is confident that Cristiano Ronaldo will stay at the club this summer.

The 37-year-old striker has told the club of his desire to leave Old Trafford following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

Chelsea are thought to be the frontrunners for his signature and Todd Boehly has held talks with Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, but Standard Sport reported on Monday that Thomas Tuchel is lukewarm to the idea of the transfer.

Ahead of facing Liverpool in a pre-season friendly in Bangkok, the new United boss provided an update on Ronaldo’s situation - the player not travelling on tour due to family issues.

Ten Hag told reporters: “[Ronaldo] is not with us. That's due to personal issues. We are planning with Ronaldo for this season - that's it. I'm looking forward to working with him.

"He hasn't told me he wants to leave. I have read but what I say, Cristiano is not for sale. He is in our plans and we want to have success together.

"I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation with him and a real good talk. That is between Cristiano and me. Only what I can confirm is that we had a really good conversation together."

Ten Hag also confirmed Harry Maguire’s continuation as United captain for the upcoming campaign and refused to comment on reports of a move for Frenkie de Jong.
