Eric Weddle has played 12 years in the NFL, so he’s been around plenty of talented cornerbacks. He’s played alongside the likes of Antonio Cromartie, Jimmy Smith, Brandon Flowers and Jason Verrett, who are all well-respected cornerbacks in their own right.
However, his newest teammates in the Rams secondary take the crown as the best he’s ever been around. Aqib Talib and Marcus Peters received some seriously high praise from Weddle recently when the two-time All-Pro safety called them the best cornerbacks he’s ever seen.
“Those guys are super, super smart,” Weddle said at the American Century Championship, via NFL.com. “The instincts are off the charts. Play-making ability. … Those two are the best I’ve ever played with in my career of guys that play with vision, play the ball, understand routes, trust a safety that is going to alert them and put them in a position to make plays knowing that I have their backs. I’m extremely excited to get on the field with them, give ’em those live reps, live-game atmosphere and take this secondary to the next level.”
When it comes to ball skills, anticipation and playmaking ability, there’s no denying Talib and Peters are two of the best around. Since 2008, Talib has 35 interceptions to lead all active players. In Peters’ career since coming into the league in 2015, he has an NFL-high 22 interceptions.
Their ball skills are unmatched, and while they had disappointing 2018 seasons with the Rams, they should bounce back with strong campaigns in 2019. The addition of Weddle should only help them, too, with his experience and leadership.
