Eric Swalwell faces ethics probe after dropping out of California governor race

  • The House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell following allegations of sexual misconduct, including sexual assault.
  • The allegations against Swalwell were detailed in reports by CNN and The San Francisco Chronicle, leading to calls for his withdrawal from the California gubernatorial race, which he subsequently did. Swalwell has called the accusations false and vowed to fight them.
  • “The Committee notes that the mere fact that it is investigating these allegations, and publicly disclosing its review, does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred,” the Committee said in a statement. “No other public comment will be made on this matter except in accordance with Committee rules.”
  • Swalwell was a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for governor of California but many Democrats, including those who had endorsed him, called on him to exit the race after the allegations were published.
  • The House is now debating whether to conduct a joint expulsion of Swalwell and a number of other members of Congress who face investigations.
