The Derby took a step towards being run at Epsom in 2020 as local council bosses pledged to explore “every possible way” to keep the Classic at its traditional home.
The public right of way over Epsom Downs - both the Derby and Oaks will be run behind closed doors thanks to the coronavirus pandemic - triggered fears the races would be moved, with Newmarket the favourite to act as stand-in.
But Jockey Club Racecourses, which owns Epsom, has tabled proposals to create a temporary exclusion zone around the course on July 4, the revised date for the two Investec-sponsored Classics.
Marcus Tregoning, who saddled Sir Percy to lift a dramatic Derby in 2006, welcomed the initiative as “the best option”.
“It would be perfect if it could be run where it should be run,” said Tregoning. “This is the best option that we’ve got.
“It tests stamina, balance, speed - everything. For all those reasons - and from the point of view of the breed - it’s where it should be run.”
An Epsom spokesperson confirmed: “We are exploring the feasibility and practicality of staging the Investec Derby and Investec Oaks at the racecourse with no crowd present, given their importance to the thoroughbred racing and breeding industries.”
Epsom’s top brass will be asked to provide greater detail of the track’s plans at an Epsom & Ewell Borough Council meeting next Tuesday evening.
The final decision rests with the Epsom and Walton Downs Conservators, but Councillor Clive Woodbridge said on Wednesday: “There are a number of challenges to overcome, but hopefully we can find a way forward.
“The Derby was first run at Epsom in 1780 and it is part of the town’s heart and soul.
“Those involved will look at every possible way to see if it can be staged at Epsom this year.
“These are extraordinary times, but it would be a terrible shame if the Derby could not be run at Epsom.”
