Environment Secretary admits he hasn't bought an electric car or heat pump yet

The UK Environment Secretary has admitted he does not have an electric car or heat pump at his home.

George Eustice said he has a “small Mini” and will “look at” replacing his gas boiler, with the government launching £5,000 grants from next year.

The Tory minister defended his position, saying people “all want to do the right thing and make these changes” but “sometimes the technology is not quite there yet”.

Critics say focusing on individual people’s responsibilities misses the point of the wider goals politicians are trying to achieve at the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow.

But several of Boris Johnson ’s climate chiefs have admitted they have not yet made the crucial switches in the UK’s Net Zero plan.

The government wants to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030 and gas boilers by 2035, replacing them with greener heat pumps.

But the government’s plan to offer £5,000 heat pump grants for three years from spring will only cover around half the cost of the technology.

There is also currently only enough funding to provide grants for 90,000 homes, out of tens of millions.

Mr Eustice told Sky News: "I have got a small Mini that has a green mode on it but I don't yet have an electric vehicle."

Asked if he has a heat pump, he said: "No, I don't have a heat pump at the moment but it's certainly something that I would look at.

"I'm the same as many other people, we all want to do the right thing and make these changes, we need the technology to come forward, we need to set a trajectory, everybody wants to make these changes, sometimes the technology is not quite there yet but we are making progress in the right direction."

Asked what changes personally he has made to protect the environment, Mr Eustice said he tries to "pay attention to the dividing of waste and making sure we recycle as much as possible".

"I'm going to be going to Cop by train and whenever I travel to the constituency I generally do so by train," he added.

Boris Johnson swerved questions over the weekend about what he had done to save the planet.

Asked if he was eating less meat as a way to limit his environmental footprint, Mr Johnson said: “I’m eating a bit less of everything, which may be an environmentally friendly thing to do.”

And he joked he had "abolished commuting" - by living in the flat above 11 Downing Street.

The PM will take a domestic flight home from the summit tonight, on the plane which took him from London to the G20 in Rome and then to Glasgow.

No10 defended the flight, saying he had limited time and the plane uses a blend of cleaner and normal jet fuel.

In August, the UK's climate change spokeswoman admitted she still drives a diesel car and did not "fancy" switching to an electric "quite yet".

Allegra Stratton told Times Radio she used her "third hand" gas guzzling VW Golf for 250-mile trips across the UK to see relatives.

When pressed on why she did not drive an eco-friendly electric vehicle, she claimed lengthy waits to charge the battery put her off.

Alok Sharma, the COP26 president, admitted on BBC Newsnight that he did not yet have an electric car.

Mr Sharma said: "I actually have a diesel car along with millions of other people.

"I don't drive it very much. I take public transport from Reading into London every day.

"I can assure you my next car will most certainly be an electric vehicle."
