'Entitled brother-in-law demands I ask his permission before naming my son'

A woman has been left heartbroken after being "forced" to change her baby's name so her brother-in-law can use it for his future son. She explained how she and her husband agreed to name their second baby after his late father - and proudly announced this intention on social media.

But after reading their post, her brother-in-law 'blew up' at them, demanding them to change their child's name so he can use it on his own one day. Taking to Reddit, the woman said: "My husband and I are currently pregnant with baby number two. We started trying back in November, and at the same time his brother and his wife were also trying for their first child.

"They had already been trying for about six months with no success yet. I was already dreading getting pregnant before them, so when I did I felt really guilty. I could tell they were upset about it but they were nice about it. Fast forward five months, we find out the sex and name the baby.

"The middle name was special because it is the name of my father-in-law that passed away a couple years ago.

"We had a gender reveal party for family (which my brother-in-law and his wife did not attend) and posted on Facebook.

"When my brother-in-law saw the name he absolutely freaked out. He wanted to use the name for his future kid."

She went on to explain how other family members started attacking them too, saying they have "no right" to use the name.

"Apparently we should've asked permission first," she added. "Since I was already feeling guilty about the pregnancy this just amplified it and I was hysterical at my party in front of my family. A nice day ruined.

"We decided to change the name so we don't have to deal with drama at family get togethers, but the damage has been done.

"My mother-in-law, who gave us her blessing to use the name, was furious with how everyone reacted. It was nice having her on our side.

"My husband and I don't feel like we can even be openly happy about our pregnancy in fear of hurting feelings.

"It just sucks all around, and I don't think we will ever get over this."

Commenting on her post, one user said: "Your brother-in-law is being completely unreasonable. You're using the name as a middle name, it's not like they can't use it at all.

"Plus your father-in-law was your husband's father too not just his so he has just as much of a right to the name.

"I don't think there is anything that can be done for them to see your side unfortunately. I'm sorry they ruined such a happy occasion."

Another user added: "I'm surprised you're changing the name just because they're jealous and reacted poorly.

"They don't get to hold on to a name for a baby that may never happen just because they feel like it.

"I wanted to name my future child my deceased father's middle name and my brother got there first.

"Do you know what I said? 'That's a great name!' Because I'm an adult. They should remember they are too.

"Changing your name is more than you owe them and you shouldn't feel guilty at all!"

A third user said: "Honestly I wouldn't change the name. There is no guarantee they will ever be able to get pregnant, and on top of that, have a boy.

"Take some time to think of what you really want to do, I am surprised so many family members are attacking you when you are the one who is expecting a boy soon."
