Entire year group at Newport High School told to self isolate after just a week back

An entire year group at a Newport secondary school has been told to self-isolate just a week after returning to the classroom.

Newport High School in Bettws has told all year 10 students to self-isolate after it was notified of a positive coronavirus case in the year group.

An email sent to parents informed students to self-isolate until March 29, with online learning to be provided this week until the break up for Easter on Friday March 26,

Earlier this month the Welsh Government announced that pupils in years 7, 8 and 9 would be permitted to go back to school on a phased return from March 15 due to falling case numbers.

All primary school pupils returned to school on March 15 along with learners in Years 10 and 12, those in exam years and students doing similar qualifications in colleges.

Younger primary pupils have been able to return to their classrooms since Monday, February 22.

However, some year groups in schools have already had to self-isolate since returning due to positive cases of the virus.

Last week pupils and teachers at seven schools in the Vale of Glamorgan were told to self-isolate after a cluster of confirmed cases at a school resource base.

Dozens of pupils at Pontprennau Primary School also had to self-isolate last week after 21 positive cases were identified.
