Entire secondary school year group sent home to isolate after Covid case confirmed

Another year group at a Newport secondary school has been asked to self-isolate after a positive Covid case was confirmed at the site.

Pupils in Year 9 at Bassaleg School were asked to self-isolate immediately as of Monday, May 10, and must isolate until Monday, May 17 - and will return to school the following day.

A letter from headteacher Victoria Lambe sent to parents reads: “This morning I was notified of a confirmed case of Covid-19 within the Year 9 contact group who has tested positive.

“In line with guidance and information from the Welsh Government, Environmental Health and Newport City Council, all pupils in Year 9 will need to self-isolate with immediate effect up to Monday May 17 inclusively. Pupils can return to school on Tuesday May 18.”

The news comes a day after Year 7 pupils were asked to self-isolate at Lliswerry High School.

Last week all Year 8 students at Lliswerry High were also told to self-isolate following a positive home test from a student.

However, on Friday the school confirmed that a subsequent PCR test taken by the student had come back negative, meaning all Year 8 students could return to school.

Online learning at home is available for those who have to self-isolate.
