Enniskillen Southern bypass: Nichola Mallon reaffirms commitment to £30m plan

Infrastructure Minister Nichola Mallon has reaffirmed her commitment to delivering the £30million Enniskillen Southern bypass project.

The decision to progress with the scheme was made earlier this year, which aims to relieve traffic congestion in the Co Fermanagh town.

During a ministerial visit to Fermanagh and Omagh, Ms Mallon met with local councillors in order to discuss the bypass and a number of other issues.

“She said: I have reaffirmed my clear commitment to the Enniskillen Southern bypass to Fermanagh & Omagh District Council representatives.

"I am also keen to help transform Enniskillen town centre by improving air quality, reducing noise pollution and enhancing active travel opportunities for locals and visitors alike.

“In line with that commitment my officials are currently drawing up a commission to examine how the bypass can unlock sustainable and active travel measures in the town centre.

“I am very aware this scheme is of significant importance to Enniskillen and I have made clear my commitment to the Council that making road improvements is crucial to tackling regional imbalance, improving the economy and connecting communities and improving road safety.

The scheme, which is estimated to cost between £25million to £30million, will see the main A4 route diverted to the south of the town, from the Dublin Road at the eastern side of the town, to the Sligo Road.

The long-awaited bypass is estimated to cut average journey times by approximately 50%, with £2million already approved to advance site works in the town.
