Jason Roy century helps England return to winning ways against Bangladesh

Jason Roy helped himself to a sparkling century as England got back to winning ways at the World Cup with a 106-run victory over Bangladesh.

An unexpected setback against Pakistan had raised the stakes of this Cardiff clash, but if there was any lingering tension, Roy's commanding knock of 153 in 121 balls blew it away in style.

He was responsible for five of England's 14 sixes, including three in a row immediately before his exit, setting the scene for a daunting total of 386 for six. Re-live the action in the blog below:

Hello! Welcome along to England's third match of this Cricket World Cup, against Bangladesh in Cardiff, and it's one England really need to win after defeat by Pakistan in their last outing. Bangladesh have won the toss, and they've chosen to field.
1.0 England 1-0 Jason Roy 1 Jonny Bairstow 0

And we're away!

Bangladesh follow what worked so well for South Africa and Pakistan and open with spin against Roy and Bairstow. Shakib Al Hasan begins proceedings here.
Chances of winning

You would hope that England will have this one in the bag, right? But after Pakistan defeat there is definitely a lot for Bangladesh to play for.

England v Bangladesh win % index
England: 85%
Bangladesh: 14%
Draw: 1%

3.0 England 7-0 Jason Roy 7 Jonny Bairstow 0

Three overs in and England, well Roy really, are just seeing off the early spin, not taking too many chances after quick dismissals in the games against Pakistan and South Africa.

5.0 England 15-0 Jason Roy 12 Jonny Bairstow 3

Oh dear, there is apparently a very large queue of people waiting for their tickets outside the stadium in Cardiff, the result is a lot of empty seats in the ground at the minute.

Things were not pretty at Trent Bridge a week ago for Pakistan's match against the West Indies either. Sort it out!
6.0 England 26-0 Jason Roy 21 Jonny Bairstow 5

Heart-in-mouth moment for Roy as he gets his second boundary of the over but only after a mis-field at mid-wicket as Mustafizur lets one through his hands.

The short boundary looks very vulnerable here and there does not seem to be a great deal of pace in this pitch.
7.0 England 26-0 Jason Roy 30 Jonny Bairstow 6

Oh here we go. Roy is playing his way nicely into this innings as he rotates his wrists and finds a gap at mid-on to add another four runs to his score.

Off back foot he finds the rope again with another classy shot. 10 from the over for England.

Roy and Bairstow will be keen to put on a decent opening partnership here after sharing little time at the crease together in the first two matches.
7.0 England 26-0 Jason Roy 30 Jonny Bairstow 6

Anyone?

8.0 England 52-0 Jason Roy 33 Jonny Bairstow 17

Bairstow gets the full face onto Shairfuddein's first delivery of the over, drives it through mid-off and picks up four. That sets him nicely to pick up three a couple of deliveries over and Roy is back on strike, good running.

EDGED...but Roy gets away with it. The ball ballooned up and safely through the gap at slip.

15 for the over as England go north of 50.

9.0 England 60-0 Jason Roy 33 Jonny Bairstow 26

After a cagey beginning, it's been a very strong start for England. Roy and Bairstow are playing sensibly, taking every ball as an individual and reading the bowlers very well.
10.0 England 67-0 Jason Roy 38 Jonny Bairstow 27

Splendid stuff from Roy, who is showing signs that this is going to be a strong innings from the Surrey batsman as he slaps Shaifuddin's delivery straight back over his head and for four.

10.0 England 67-0 Jason Roy 38 Jonny Bairstow 27
11.0 England 76-0 Jason Roy 40 Jonny Bairstow 34

Score predictor is suggesting England will get 354. I'm going to throw out that they may well get a few more than that.
12.0 England 87-0 Jason Roy 51 Jonny Bairstow 34

There's his 50! Roy is motoring here and brings up his half-century with a wonderful drive for six.

14 England 93-0 Jason Roy 57 Jonny Bairstow 34

Well, there's not a huge amount of faith in a riveting Bangladesh comeback...

15 England 101-0 Jason Roy 59 Jonny Bairstow 39

There's actually a serious point from KP hidden in that Tweet. England have started so well, maybe even too well, and there absolutely no way that Bangladesh are coming back into this, thus rendering the next six hours a procession to the eventual conclusion.

One-day cricket certainly has its moments, but too often this scenario crops up there the sense of competition is wiped away.
15.2 England 102-0 Jason Roy 60 Jonny Bairstow 39

16 England 111-0 Jason Roy 67Jonny Bairstow 40

Roy is making things look so easy out there as he whacks one over extra-cover and away for four. Bangladesh can only pray for an unforced error to get him out....

And just as I type that there's a potential run out! It's Bairstow scrambling to get back to the non-strikers' end, but he just about makes it in time. Bangladesh might have done better to go for Roy at the other end.
17 England 114-0 Jason Roy 68 Jonny Bairstow 41

Hasan Mehidy comes into the attack as Mashrade Mortaza turns to his middle-over spinners to try and break this partnership, or even try to slow it down!

He finds a bit of turn in his final delivery and hits Bairstow's pads. There's a half-hearted appeal that is turned down an no DRS appeal follows.
18 England 120-0 Jason Roy 69 Jonny Bairstow 46

Bangladesh have absolutely nothing else to offer against England as Bairstow clips away Mortaza's delivery, flicking it between fine leg and deep-square leg for four.

DRINKS!
