England vs Australia Ashes 2023: 4th Test preview

All talk was about Jimmy Anderson ahead of the Ashes 4th Test at Old Trafford, the stadium that has a stand named in his honour, but Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes did the damage as Australia were skittled for 299-8. It's a promising start for the hosts, who must win to keep the Ashes alive. However, England bowling well only to mess up their own innings has become a running theme of this series.

Leading 2-1, the Aussies only need a draw to retain the Ashes, and if the forecasts prove accurate, the weather could have a significant say in proceedings. Rain is expected to affect play on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so England need to bring their A-game and deliver it explosively.

Anderson took the place of Ollie Robinson in England's only personnel change, but it's the inclusion of Jonny Bairstow that's perhaps more significant. The makeshift wicket-keeper has barely put a hand, bat or foot right throughout the entire contest, and with the Ashes on the line, he's running out of chances to justify his inclusion at the expense of Ben Foakes.

Josh Hazlewood took the place of Scott Boland in Australia's team, which also includes David Warner, who hasn't been able to find his groove at all so far. Mitchell Marsh, who scored a century as a stand-in for Cameron Green, also retained his place alongside the man he deputised for, so there's no room for Todd Murphy. That means Australia line up for a Test without a frontline spinner for the first time since 2012.
