England to start T20 World Cup against West Indies in repeat of 2016 final

England will open their T20 World Cup campaign against champions West Indies in Dubai this October.

England face a challenging draw in the Super 12 stage of the tournament, which follows an eight-team qualifier event.

They open up Group 1 against the Windies, who beat them in the final of the last edition of the tournament in 2016, on October 24. They also face Australia in Dubai before finishing against South Africa on Sharjah’s small boundaries, with meetings with qualifiers in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah along the way too.

Only two teams advance from each six-strong group to the semi-finals, so England can only afford to lose one match.

Group 2 begins with a rare meeting between India and Pakistan, in Dubai. Their main competition for qualification comes from New Zealand and Afghanistan.

The semi-finals take place on November 10 and 11, while the final is in Dubai on November 14, which would leave some England players with a dash to the Ashes and possible quarantine in Australia.
