England will take on old rivals Australia in next week’s Cricket World Cup semi-final.

Eoin Morgan’s side reached their first semi-final since 1992 by beating New Zealand in their final group match on Wednesday, securing qualification with a third-place finish.

They had looked likely to face India in the last four, but Virat Kohli’s side leapfrogged Australia on the final day of the competition’s round-robin phase to finish top of the group.

India were comfortable seven-wicket winners over Sri Lanka at Headingley before Australia slumped to a 10-run loss at the hands of South Africa at Old Trafford later in the day.

That means India will play fourth-place New Zealand in the first semi-final at Old Trafford on Tuesday instead, in the first meeting of the sides at this tournament, after their scheduled group match at Trent Bridge was washed out last month.

England and Australia will then play at Edgbaston – a ground where England have won ten matches in a row in all formats – on Thursday, with the winners meeting in the final at Lord’s on July 14.

England will be looking for revenge after the Aussies cruised to a 64-run win in the group stage meeting at Lord’s, a result that, at the time, put the hosts on the brink of elimination.
