England's World Cup semi-final loss to USA watched by 11.7m for most-watched TV programme of year

A peak viewing audience of 11.7m watched England's Women's World Cup semi-final loss to USA on BBC One.

It marks yet another new record for women's football in the UK and becomes the most-watched TV programme of 2019.

The figures also revealed that the peak share of the TV audience during the match was 50.8 per cent.

Along with those watching at home, pubs, bars and fan zones across the capital were packed with supporters on Tuesday night as the Lionesses lost 2-1 to the reigning champions.

Christen Press headed home the opener for the Americans after just 10 minutes, only for Ellen White to poke home her sixth goal of the tournament against the run of play soon after.

Alex Morgan put the two-time winners back in front to cap a frantic opening half hour.

VAR dominated the second half, with England seeing a goal disallowed for offside after White had beaten goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher.

England then had a penalty awarded eight minutes from time but Steph Houghton was denied before Millie Bright was sent off late on as England's World Cup dream came to a heartbreaking end.
