England player ratings vs Wales: Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden shine to seal World Cup last-16 spot

England set up a World Cup last-16 against Senegal with a 3-0 win over Wales, thanks to Marcus Rashford’s double and a Phil Foden strike.

After a dour first-half, Rashford fired England in front five minutes after the break with a superb direct free-kick, won by Foden, and the Manchester City winger doubled the lead a minute later with a back-post finish from Harry Kane’s cross.

Rashford wrapped up a comfortable win by cutting inside from the right and firing through the legs of Wales goalkeeper Danny Ward, whose side were eliminated with a whimper.

Jordan Pickford 6

Largely untroubled aside from a smart reaction save to keep out Kieffer Moore’s deflected effort.

Kyle Walker 7

Looked sharp in his first appearance in Qatar after groin surgery. His fitness gives Gareth Southgate the option to switch to a back three against Senegal or in a potential quarter-final vs France.

John Stones 6

Used the ball well in another composed display and kept it tight at the back during a late Wales push.

Harry Maguire 7

Drove forward and sprayed some lovely diagonals in another encouraging outting in Qatar. Not really examined defensively but stood up well to towering forward Moore.

Luke Shaw 6

Put in a couple of dangerous crosses in the first half and was completely untroubled by Gareth Bale, who was replaced at half-time after just seven touches.

Declan Rice 6

Put in a shift in a solid in the middle of the park before being given a rest for the final half-hour.

Jordan Henderson 6

An extra midfielder wasn’t really needed for this kind of game but his leadership qualities are always a plus for England.

Jude Bellingham 7

Another impressive performance in a more advanced role. Physically imposing for such a young player but equally full of clever touches too.

Phil Foden 8

Justified the clamour and his selection with a decisive display. Won the freekick for Rashford’s first goal and finished off Kane’s cross to double England’s lead. Hard to drop now.

Marcus Rashford 9

Scored a superb direct freekick and a fine run and finish. Also made England’s second goal by winning the ball back from Ben Davies. Surely must keep his place vs Senegal.

Harry Kane 7

Still yet to score but got another assist with a super cross for Foden. Also set up an early chance for Rashford with a smart through ball. Given a much-needed rest for final 33 minutes.

Subs

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Walker 56’) 6

Linked up well with Rashford and then Foden down the right flank, but the game had lost his intensity by the time Southgate made changes.

Kalvin Phillips (Rice 56’) 7

Made Rashford’s second goal with a great pass over the top in a reminder of what he offers.

Callum Wilson (Kane 56’) 7

Unselfishly played in Rashford and Bellingham for shooting chances in a lively appearance.

Kieran Trippier (Shaw 64’) 6

Kept it simple at left-back, allowing Shaw a breather.

Jack Grealish (Rashford 75’) 6

Not enough time to make a real impression in a game which was already won.
