England player ratings vs Brazil: Anthony Gordon impresses on debut but Lewis Dunk's Euros dream may be over

Teenager substitute Endrick stole the show with his first Brazil goal as England were beaten 1-0 in Saturday night’s friendly at Wembley.

There was, however, still plenty for Gareth Southgate to take from what was the penultimate game before he must name his squad for this summer’s European Championship.

So, who impressed and who fluffed their lines? Here’s how the Three Lions rated at Wembley...

Jordan Pickford 6

A clean sheet, albeit he was well beaten when Lucas Pauqeta strike came back off the post. Distribution largely tidy.

Kyle Walker 6

Started the night as captain but lasted less than 20 minutes before limping off, having tweaked something when racing back to clear Vinicius effort off the line.

John Stones 6

In terrific form for his club and carried that into an England shirt with a confident, largely error-free display as the regular in what became a makeshift back-four. A few nice carries into midfield, too.

Harry Maguire 5

Let off the hook when Rodrygo slid wide from poor backpass and several other sluggish moments. Dunk’s display later on would show why there is still little pressure on his place, though.

Ben Chilwell 5

Big opportunity to impress with Luke Shaw sidelined but did not take it. Snatched at two half-chances and not as defensively secure as the Manchester United man.

Conor Gallagher 6

A Jekyll and Hyde display. Brought energy, drive and won several free-kicks in good positions but allowed Brazil players to glide past him on more than one occasion.

Declan Rice 6

Asked to play as the deepest of the midfield three. Did so comfortably, but England perhaps lose something of his pressing with that responsibility. Promoted to set-piece duty after success at Arsenal and delivery was good.

Jude Bellingham 6

Given licence in the advanced No10 role. Not his most threatening night, but plays with such swagger and presence. Will be better again with Harry Kane to play off.

Phil Foden 6

Bukayo Saka’s absence allowed City star to shift to his preferred right flank. Usual quality on the ball, but might an outing on the left have been more informative if a Saka-Kane-Foden frontline is to be Euro 2024’s Plan A?

Ollie Watkins 6

Quiet start but made a couple of decent openings with good runs into the channels. Blazed early chance over but replays showed defender’s vital touch made it awkward.

Anthony Gordon 7

First call-up quickly followed by a full debut. Another who grew into the game, twice testing Bento from range, albeit saves were comfortable.

Substitutes

Ezri Konsa (Walker 20’) 6

Interesting that Southgate handed the Villa man a debut ahead of Joe Gomez. Could have been a thankless task thrown on against Vinicius but did okay.

Joe Gomez (Chilwell 67’) 6

Showed versatility when slotting in at left-back.

Lewis Dunk (Maguire 67’) 4

Sketchy moment where hesitation almost allowed Rodrygo in, then at fault for the goal. Any hope of making the plane to Germany may have gone up in smoke with this cameo.

Jarrod Bowen (Bellingham 67’) 6

One terrific run down the right brought a bit of excitement to a drifting second-half. Deserves a start against Belgium if Southgate is in experimental mood.

Marcus Rashford (Gordon 75’) N/A

That he did not start shows Southgate was not bluffing when he said this week the United man faces a fight for his Euros place. Missed great chance to level from Rice cross late on.

Kobbie Mainoo (Gallagher 75’) N/A

Huge ovation when sent on for his debut late on. Every bit as composed as billed, with one delightful turn in midfield.

Unused: Johnstone, Ramsdale, Branthwaite, Maddison, Toney
