England crushed by Australia again to miss out on Commonwealth Games medal

England were beaten again by Australia in Glasgow - (PA)

England missed out on a netball medal after suffering a second crushing defeat to Australia on the final day of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Roses fell away after a promising first quarter to lose 68-50, emulating their earlier 66-47 defeat to the Diamonds in the group phase.

Australia, who had been forced to quickly regroup after Saturday’s stunning last-gasp semi-final loss to Jamaica, dominated the second half of the contest to secure the bronze medal.

It is the first time Australia have not contested a netball final since the sport was introduced to the Games in 1998.

New Zealand overcame Jamaica to secure their third Commonwealth Games title and complete an unbeaten tournament.

The Silver Ferns had been too strong for England on Saturday and ended the Sunshine Girls’ hopes of becoming just the fourth team to claim gold.
