England captain Joe Root breaks Michael Vaughan record in first Ashes Test

England captain Joe Root claimed yet another record this year, breaking Michael Vaughan 's record for the most Test runs in a calendar year by an Englishman.

Vaughan scored 1,481 runs at an average of 61.14 back in 2002, including six hundreds and two fifties.

Root went into tea on day three of the first Ashes Test against Australia level with Vaughan on 26 not out, but went past him with a single off Nathan Lyon.

The 30-year-old has been in excellent form this year, making six hundreds and two double hundreds.

In the first innings, Root was undone by an excellent over from Josh Hazlewood, who got him caught at slip for a nine-ball duck.

However, he looked much more at ease in the second innings, avoiding an unwanted pair and sharing an important partnership with Dawid Malan.

Root scored 426 runs in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka at the start of the year, before making 386 on the tour of India.

He followed that up with 97 runs in the two Tests against New Zealand, before starring with 564 on home soil against India - a series which included three consecutive hundreds.

After passing Vaughan, Root moved to number ten on the list of players who have scored the most Test runs in a calendar year.

Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf sits top of the list with 1,788 runs in 2006, while West Indies legend Viv Richards is second with 1,710.

Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith, Australia's Michael Clarke and India legend Sachin Tendulkar round out the top five.

Sunil Gavaskar sits at number six with 1,555 runs, while ex-Australia captain Ricky Ponting occupies the next two spots.

Former Sri Lanka star Kumar Sangakkara was left just 11 runs ahead of Root when the England captain passed Vaughan.

By the end of the day, Root had reached 86 not out and moved up to number eight on the list.
