'End of an era' in Malahide as legendary figure retires from popular shop after 35 years

It's the end of an era in north Dublin as a legendary village figure is retiring from his garden shop after 35 years.

Michael's Garden Centre in Malahide will be closing its doors temporarily after the man himself sadly fell ill recently.

With the shop currently closed for refurbishment, Michael made the decision to call it a day, leading to an outpouring of well wishes for "a fixture of the village"

The Enjoy Malahide Facebook page posted this touching tribute to the man after hearing the news.

They wrote: "The end of an era... we’re sad to say goodbye to Michael's Garden Centre Malahide.

"Michael is a true Malahide legend. A fixture of the village, his personality and flowers graced the town with an enduring splash of colour for over 35 years.

"With Micheal under the weather and the site being redeveloped he took the decision to focus on his health and family, but as soon as possible he hopes to be out and about to say a proper farewell."

But the shop will hopefully be able to reopen soon to "offer a reduced garden centre selection of products with some new ranges such as garden furniture and BBQ’s".

And in a perfect example of the man's impact, a number of people took to the comments to leave lovely messages wishing Michael well in his retirement.

One said: "We will miss you Mick, Malahide Diamond won’t be the same. Wishing you a speedy recovery- all the best to you and your family."

Another wrote: "Oh no. Just loved Michael’s garden centre and all the help and advice he gave. The garden bloomed all summer every summer thanks to Michael. The very best of luck Michael. Speedy recovery. You got this."

And a third read: "Such a loss for the village but understand the need to put one’s health and well being first. From spring splashes, to summer blooms, to our annual Christmas tree, you’ll be missed Michael."
