'End of an era' for Dublin's street lights as part of massive €55million upgrade

Tens of thousands of street lights across Dublin are set to undergo a massive upgrade as part of a Dublin City Council project.

The €55million euro initiative will see almost 50,000 lights being switched from sodium to LED lightbulbs.

The change has been called "the end of an era" by the council's senior engineer Martin Maycock.

Sodium bulbs have been used in lamp posts across Dublin for the last 70 years.

Mr Maycock said a lot of the traditional lights that lit up the capital's streets are no longer being manufactured.

"ED is a good fit for our second piece. It can achieve upwards of 50% energy savings when the project is installed.

"So, there are significant financial savings associated with that for the council," he told RTE.

LED lights give a much clearer light compared to the traditional low-pressure sodium bulbs so the public will certainly notice the change, he added.

He continued: "Quite often the traditional light can give various shades of brown of orange, but the LED lights give much clearer variations of high display."

So far around 9,000 of the 44,000 street lights in Dublin have seen their sodium lightbulbs swapped for LED.

A tender process is currently ongoing with the council hoping to start working with all the other lights this summer.
