Employees start packing 'lucky bags' for New Year sales

Department stores have been preparing their fukubukuro lucky bags ahead of the New Year bargain hunt.

At Seibu Ikebukuro department store in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, staff were busy filling fukubukuro bags on Wednesday. The store will sell a "Heisei-era sweets buffet fukubukuro," at 2,019, yen which includes an offer for a buffet featuring treats such as tiramisu and panna cotta that became popular in the era. The lucky bag selection also includes a vintage sake fukubukuro, at 6,500, yen which contains a bottle of sake brewed in 1989, the first year of the Heisei era.
