A British nurse has shared his thanks after people across the country joined in a mass round of applause for NHS staff for their work amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Craig Leathard, a senior charge nurse at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in north east England, posted an emotional video to Facebook.

Mr Leathard said in the video that he took his team out to watch the round of applause and thanked Brits for the gesture.

He added in a comment: "Wow just wow... I’ve stood on many ambulance bays and shed sad tears over the years.

"Tonight - that was different. I cannot tell you just how special connected and proud that made us feel to ‘our’ communities...

"Human kindness, that's how we win".

The video has been shared nearly 50,000 times, with almost 10,000 comments praising Mr Leathard and the NHS.

People across the UK took part in a round of applause to show thanks to the NHS staff for their work with coronavirus patients on Thursday evening.

Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - the children of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge - were seen in a video joining in the applause.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak also clapped outside 10 Downing Street.

Elsewhere, landmarks across the UK turned blue - the colour of the NHS - to show gratitude to Britain's healthcare workers.

A total of 759 people have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus, a figure announced by health officials and correct as of 5pm on Thursday evening.
