Emmys 2019: Fleabag takes home Best Comedy Series and Best Actress for Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Phoebe Waller-Bridge had a huge night at this year’s Emmys as Fleabag took home four awards.

The show beat hot favourite Veep in the Outstanding Comedy Series category with Waller-Bridge herself winning the Outstanding Actress, Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series trophies.

“It’s sickening how much we all love each other,” she said, referencing Fleabag's cast and crew. She later specifically thanked Andrew Scott for coming into the second series of the hit sitcom "like a whirlwind".

She joked that the possibility of winning awards was the reason she wrote the series in the first place, commenting: "I find writing really hard and really painful, but I'd like to say from the bottom of my heart that the reason that I do it is this. So it's made it all really worth it guys, thank you so much."

Waller-Bridge's win against Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a particular surprise, given the American actor had won in the category six times for her role in Veep, and was widely expected to enjoy a full set with the show's seventh and final series.

It was a terrific night for British talent. Ben Whishsaw (A Very English Scandal), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and Black Mirror's Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones all won key awards.

HBO series Game of Thrones, which was the evening’s most nominated show, took home just two trophies – Outstanding Drama Series and Supporting Actor for Peter Dinklage, who played Tyrion Lannister.

Patricia ArquetteMichelle Williams and Billy Porter – who became the first openly gay Africa-American winner of Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series in Emmys history – were all praised for their acceptance speeches.
