Emmerdale star Louise Jameson, who is currently playing Rhona's mother, Mary Goskirk, on the long running ITV soap has signed a contract for another 12 months, after proving a hit with fans.

The 71-year-old actress joined the soap last year and quickly became a firm favourite with viewers, in emotional scenes that aired in 2022 Mary opened up about her sexuality when she revealed she is a lesbian.

Mary explained that she had moved to the Dales for a fresh start and to "be more open about myself", the move was highly praised by viewers with many saying it inspired them to come out to their families.

Actress Louise Jameson actually first appeared in the soap nearly 50-years-ago in the programme’s Emmerdale Farm days. The acting star actually has an enviable accolade.

Louise played teenager Sharon Crossthwaite, the cousin of Annie Sugden, and daughter to Beryl and Ronnie Crossthwaite. Sharon met a gruesome fate in 1973 when she was raped and murdered by Jim Latimer.

The minor character was the first ever character to be murdered on the ITV soap. Discussing her previous role, Louise said: “She was a very sweet and innocent young girl. We can’t bring her back because she's dead, so I've come back as someone completely other!”

In a more recent interview with The Sun, Louise revealed the good news, she said: "I’ve just signed for another year, so I’m definitely there until January 2024. In my head I’m thinking maybe a couple of years after that, maybe a three or four year stint."

However, the soap star isn't ruling anything out, she added: "But there are people here who have been here 25 years going, 'Yeah, I said that at the beginning' so who knows? They’re such a lovely bunch, who knows?”

An insider allegedly told The Sun: "Louise has been a revelation on Emmerdale and bosses were keen for her to stay."
