Emmerdale hit with '400 Ofcom complaints' over Laurel and Jai storyline

Emmerdale's controversial storyline which sees a couple decide to terminate their pregnancy after being told their unborn child has Down's syndrome has reportedly attracted more than 400 complaints to Ofcom.

Tonight's episode saw Laurel and Jai receive the results of their CVS test confirming their baby has Down’s syndrome.

They were told by the medical consultant they had 'two options' to either go ahead with the pregnancy or choose to have an abortion.

Numb by what they had heard, they returned home knowing there was a lot to work out and process.

But they were shocked to discover that whilst they were gone Gabby had found the scan picture and they walked into the house to have the kids greeting them excitedly about getting another brother or sister.

However, according to Metro, the soap has been hit by hundreds of complaints.

Following unrest on social media, 265 complaints were said to have been registered with Ofcom after scenes aired showing Laurel asking about abortion on November 30.

Since then, Ofcom told the newspaper a further 182 complaints were made.

Show producer Laura Shaw told Metro.co.uk: "We’re confident that what we’ve produced has been done in a really balanced and sensitive way. We haven’t gone into this blindly, we’ve spoken to as many people as we possibly can.

"We’ve got the research, this is based on real-life, and I think people will see that.

"You’re going to feel uncomfortable at times watching it, but I hope that people will then, as they watch it, understand why we’ve done it."
