Emmerdale actor Steve Halliwell returns as Zak Dingle after six month break

Emmerdale actor Steve Halliwell has returned to filming as Zak Dingle after a six month break, it has been reported.

The 65-year-old actor took time away from the show following a heart operation but is set to be back on screens in the near-future.

Steve has played the soap legend since 1994, but fans were worried that his character Zak would not return to the Dales after leaving in September 2019 to visit Debbie in Scotland.

In May last year, his on-screen wife Lisa was killed off after actress Jane Cox decided to leave the soap after 23 years.

However a source has told The Sun Online that bosses didn't want Steve's return to be overshadowed by Graham Foster's death.

Thankfully, fans will be glad to hear, he is reportedly back filming scenes for the show.

An insider told the publication: "He was off screen for a break, but it was mainly as Zak wasn't involved in the Who Shot Graham storyline.

"But fans will have missed him - he's a show legend after all - and he'll be back on their screens in a few weeks time. He's having a great time back on set and everyone was really pleased to see him at work."

He was previously off screens for several months in 2018 after having a pacemaker fitted.

At the time, he said: "Emmerdale have been brilliant throughout and really looked after me. I did have to spend some time in hospital and it was really funny to see the entire Dingle clan around my bed.

Steve is already reportedly back filming (ITV)

"Everyone has been so considerate and I know it sounds a bit of a cliché, but we really are one big happy family."

It has not yet been confirmed when he will be back on screen however his on-screen granddaughter Debbie is also set to come back after Charley Webb returns from maternity leave.

*Emmerdale airs weekdays at 7pm, with additional episodes at 8pm on Thursdays
