Emma Raducanu was blasted off the court by Elena Rybakina as the British No 1 fell to a 6-1 6-2 defeat to exit the US Open at the third-round stage.
After breezing through the first two rounds of the tournament she won in 2021, Raducanu faced a huge step up in level against the former Wimbledon and champion and Australian Open finalist Rybakina. The ninth seed broke early in both sets and was dominant in the rallies as she raced to a 62-minute victory.
Raducanu said that she has taken confidence from how she pushed Aryna Sabalenka across their two battles at Wimbledon and the Cincinnati Open, but this was another reminder of the work that the 22-year-old needs to do to get closer to the best in the world. She has now lost eight matches in a row against opponents ranked in the top-10.
Rybakina immediately found her groove, rushing Raducanu with her monstrous groundstrokes. Blowing a 40-0 lead in the opening game of the second set as Rybakina made it four games in a row was a huge setback for Raducanu.
Later at the US Open, Cameron Norrie will take on Novak Djokovic, who has struggled for form so far. Norrie is the last British player standing in the singles after Jacob Fearnley’s defeat to Alexander Zverev and Jack Draper’s withdrawal before his second-round match due to an arm injury.

Raducanu believes world’s best play with ‘point to prove’ against her
18:54 , Jamie BraidwoodEmma Raducanu believes the best players in the world feel they have a “point to prove” against her because of the British No 1’s early grand slam success after a 6-1 6-2 defeat to Elena Rybakina in the US Open third round.
Raducanu has lost to high-ranked opponents in each of the four grand slam tournaments this season, going down heavily to Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open and the French Open and pushing Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon.
“I think when the very top play against me, they have a point to prove that they're at the top, and they're there for a reason, I think every time I've played one, they've kind of shown that,” Raducanu said.
“I think at the same time while I'm improving, doing better, gaining maybe some more respect, I think the top have definitely raised their game. But I'll take that as a compliment that they've decided to really lock in against me, but at the same time it does show I have a lot more work to do.”

Emma Raducanu on her 6-1 6-2 defeat to Elena Rybakina
18:31 , Jamie Braidwood“I thought Elena played very well, and I found it very difficult to get any sort of rhythm in the match.
“So when I did have a ball, it was kind of hard for me to all of a sudden, you know, like hit a quality shot, because so many of them were so deep or I didn't touch that many either. So it was just hard to really capitalise on the few moments that I had. Credit to her. She played a very good match.
“I think maybe if I held in the first game of the second set, but being 40-0 up, I mean, I missed a couple of shots that I probably wouldn't usually miss. But at the same time, I just felt like every ball was so difficult that I was receiving. Then I was kind of shocked when I got a shorter ball.
“So it was difficult, but otherwise, I thought I tried to mix it up with my return position. I thought overall, yeah, she served well, returned well, and did a lot well.”
Emma Raducanu’s US Open run ended by ruthless Elena Rybakina
17:49 , Eleanor CrooksEmma Raducanu’s US Open campaign came to a brutal end in the third round at the hands of former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Raducanu had breezed through to the third round, winning her first two matches for the loss of only six games, but here she was on the receiving end as Rybakina powered to a 6-1 6-2 victory in just 62 minutes.

Raducanu’s 2025 record against top-10 opponents takes a hit
17:42 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu has to hope to continue the positive momentum she is building under coach Francisco Roig as well as the consistent work on the practice courts.
Improving her ranking and ensuring she starts to enter grand slams a seeded player has to be a huge goal now ahead of the 2026 season.
Her grand slam defeat in 2025 came to Elena Rybakina, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, three of the best four players in the world along with Coco Gauff.

Rybakina reflects on US Open win over Raducanu
17:24 , Jamie BraidwoodElena Rybakina, famously, does not show much emotion on court but she was a worthy winner today and her game is great to watch when it’s firing like it was today.
“Really happy with the performance, It’s not easy to play against Emma,” she says. “Sometimes the score doesn’t show it but she’s a tough competitor. I’m happy with how I played today.
“Throughout the years, for some reason, US Open wasn’t successful for me. Hopefully this year it will change and I can go as far as possible.”
Rybakina looking like a US Open contender
17:21 , Jamie BraidwoodElena Rybakina is through to the fourth round of the US Open for the first time, and could play Jasmine Paolini next. She’s also in the same quarter as World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
On this form, she could beat anyone. As a reminder, the former Wimbledon champion and Australian Open finalist has reached three hard-court semi-finals this season, so is in great form. Is New York where she takes the next step?

Raducanu struggles against another top-10 opponent
17:17 , Jamie BraidwoodUnfortunately this continues a bit of a pattern for Raducanu. Apart from two brilliant showings against World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon and Cincinnati, she has been bounced out from several major tournaments this season by top-10 opponents.
This felt quite similar to the 6-1 6-0 defeat to Swiatek at the Australian Open, or the 6-1 6-2 to Swiatek at the French, or the 6-1 6-2 defeat to Coco Gauff at the Italian Open, or the 6-2 6-1 defeat to Amanda Anisimova in Montreal.

Emma Raducanu heads home from US Open
17:14 , Jamie BraidwoodBarely a murmur from the Louis Armstrong Stadium crowd as Rybakina wraps up a rapid victory. Raducanu had the backing of the crowd, but they were left stunned by how one-sided that 6-1 6-2 win was I think.
Rybakina did not face a single break point and converted the opening break in both sets.
GAME, SET AND MATCH! Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-6 Elena Rybakina
17:12 , Jamie BraidwoodRybakina makes no mistake on serve. A truly dominant win.
Raducanu is out.
BREAK! Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-5 Elena Rybakina*
17:09 , Jamie BraidwoodRybakina senses the chance to get this done. Raducanu staggers back after finding the net and will face two break points. The way Rybakina is serving, they may as well be match points.
But Rybakina can’t return on the backhand side, after another miss on the first break point. Rybakina is forced into another miss, as Raducanu finds a way to break her rhythm.
But Rybakina won’t go away. She again steps in and finds the big crosscourt forehand. Raducanu fires wide on the angle.
That could be it.
*Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-4 Elena Rybakina
17:03 , Jamie BraidwoodInterestingly, Raducanu has dropped several feet behind the baseline when facing the serve after creeping right inside the baseline in the early stages. It gives Raducanu more of a look.
Rybakina responds to facing 30-30 with an ace down the middle - her first of the match.
Rybakina then holds with a massive one-two punch. No chance for Raducanu as the forehand flashes past.

Emma Raducanu 1-6 2-3 Elena Rybakina*
16:58 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu finds another forehand winner on game point to keep within touching distance of Rybakina.
If she can just get within sight of a break point opportunity... she’s yet to get close.
Raducanu’s won just eight returning points so far, which is 32 per cent.
*Emma Raducanu 1-6 1-3 Elena Rybakina
16:55 , Jamie BraidwoodA love-hold from Rybakina, who is winning 80 per cent of her first-serve points despite making less than 50 per cent of her first shot.
She is still looking comfortable.
Emma Raducanu 1-6 1-2 Elena Rybakina*
16:51 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu again gets to 40-0 on serve. This time she holds. Rybakina floats the return back and Raducanu can find the angle to reply with the winner.
It’s a start.
*Emma Raducanu 1-6 0-2 Elena Rybakina
16:48 , Jamie BraidwoodThe patten continues in the Rybakina service game. Big serve, big strike. The forehand winner moves her 40-15 ahead and then Raducanu can only get a racket to the wide serve.
This is slipping away from Raducanu, after just 38 minutes.
BREAK! Emma Raducanu 1-6 0-1 Elena Rybakina*
16:46 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu is broken from 40-0 up. A huge blow.
After saving the first break point, Rybakina thundered a forehand return winner down the line, picking the serve apart.
It’s the same on the second break point, Rybakina again working her way into a dominant position and Raducanu making the error.
An opening break for the ninth seed.
*Emma Raducanu 1-6 0-0 Elena Rybakina
16:44 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu puts a forehand into the open court to move 40-0 and looks set for a comfortable opening hold.
But three unforced errors in a row drags Raducanu into deuce, as the serve completely disappears.
Rybakina targets the second serve and Raducanu fires wide on the forehand, bringing up break point.
Raducanu saves with the ace! This is already a huge game in this set.

*Emma Raducanu 1-6 0-0 Elena Rybakina
16:40 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu has hit just one winner in the match so far, while Rybakina has 11 already.
That illustrates the difference in the rallies. Rybakina is so dominant at the moment and outpowering Raducanu.
Got to find a way to break it up. Raducanu will serve to start the second set.
FIRST SET! *Emma Raducanu 1-6 Elena Rybakina
16:37 , Jamie BraidwoodIt’s looking easy for Rybakina. She has all the time to blast her huge forehand and send Raducanu scrambling. It comes down down power and Raducanu has yet to find a way to disrupt the barrage from the other end of the court.
Rybakina double faults on her first set point, but then puts away an overhead that just caught the edge of the line. Raducanu took a long look at that. Rybakina finds the wide serve on the second set point and Raducanu can’t return.
6-1 in 27 minutes.
BREAK! Emma Raducanu 1-5 Elena Rybakina*
16:33 , Jamie BraidwoodAnything half a yard short from Raducanu is being gobbled up by Rybakina and the flat power of her strike means the groundstrokes are flashing into Raducanu.
After two big winners, Rybakina’s deep return catches the baseline and Raducanu concedes the break.
Rybakina will serve for the set.
*Emma Raducanu 1-4 Elena Rybakina
16:29 , Jamie BraidwoodWhen Rybakina is playing like this it really is incredible that she is yet to reach another grand slam final since her Australian Open final defeat to Aryna Sabalenka in 2023. She’s yet to advance past the third round of the US Open in three attempts, but this is a phenomenal start.
*Emma Raducanu 1-4 Elena Rybakina
16:28 , Jamie BraidwoodRybakina is really dominating with the crosscourt forehand to Raducanu’s, really through the sheer weight.
Another mighty one-two punch from Rybakina with the big serve and forehand strike, pinning Raducanu into the corner.
Emma Raducanu 1-3 Elena Rybakina*
16:25 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu needs to stay calm and tell herself that there is still plenty of time to get back into this first set.
Importantly, she gets on the board as Rybakina puts a couple of returns long. Raducanu then moves in and puts away a forehand, which is greeted by an enthusiastic cheer from the Armstrong crowd.

*Emma Raducanu 0-3 Elena Rybakina
16:21 , Jamie BraidwoodA scrappier game on serve from Rybakina but she absorbs the Raducanu return to flash another brilliant winner.
Raducanu, a little off balance, then nets on the deep Rybakina ball. A dominant start form the ninth seed.

Emma Raducanu 0-2 Elena Rybakina*
16:18 , Jamie BraidwoodThat’s the first time Raducanu has been broken at this year’s US Open.
BREAK! Emma Raducanu 0-2 Elena Rybakina*
16:17 , Jamie BraidwoodThat was a statement of a game from Rybakina, who out hits Raducanu with that flat punchy strike get the opening break. A ferocious forehand brings up three break points.
Rybakina makes a couple of errors as Raducanu saves the first two. Rybakina then gets a look at a second serve, and although Raducanu makes a scrambling return out wide, Rybakina fires into the opposite corner.
Ruthless.
*Emma Raducanu 0-1 Elena Rybakina
16:14 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu’s own serve was firing wonderfully in the second round against Janice Tjen but Rybakina’s first two returns offers a completely different weight of shot, and Raducanu can’t reply.
0-30.
*Emma Raducanu 0-1 Elena Rybakina
16:13 , Jamie BraidwoodEncouraging to see Raducanu taking a couple of steps forward when facing the Rybakina second serve and looking to take it on.
Rybakina flashes a couple of forehand winers on both sides and then fires the first unreturned serve - there will be many more of them I’m sure.
Raducanu’s bunted return drifts long and Rybakina holds.
Emma Raducanu 0-0 Elena Rybakina*
16:10 , Jamie BraidwoodRybakina’s serve is one of the biggest on the WTA - perhaps the biggest in the women’s game - and when it’s firing the former Wimbledon champion can beat anyone in the world.
But she’s not always consistent and Raducanu will be full of belief after arriving full of confidence into this one.
Rybakina will serve first. Let’s go!

16:05 , Jamie BraidwoodHere we go! Raducanu and Rybakina emerge out onto the Louis Armstrong Court ahead of this third-round match.
Raducanu has played in this 11am start time slot, on Armstrong, in both of her wins so far at the US Open.
It clearly suits her, and Raducanu will hope to continue her strong form against a tough opponent like Rybakina.
The warm-ups are underway.
Emma Raducanu's record against top-10 opponents
16:01 , Jamie BraidwoodEmma Raducanu’s match against Elena Rybakina, the ninth seed and current World No 10, is the 10th time the British No 1 has played against a top-10 ranked player this season.
Raducanu has won one of those matches, beating Emma Navarro in the Miami Open, but has lost the other eight, including her recent defeat to World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in Cincinnati.
Raducanu has brought up how much confidence she has taken from her defeats to Sabalenka as a sign that she is getting closer, but improving her record against top-10 opponents has to be a major target.
She gets another go today against Rybakina.

Emma Raducanu plays down concerns over back injury before Rybakina test
15:56 , Jamie BraidwoodAfter her win over Janice Tjen on Wednesday, Raducanu was asked about her back after she was seen stretching it out on the baseline between points. It has been a concern for Raducanu in the past but the British No 1 played down any fears that it could be an issue in the US Open.
“I just had a little bit of stiffness in the second set. I think I have been doing a lot of training, and I'm just happy it didn't affect me too much in the second set and I was still able to compete and to perform well and keep putting out good serves, good returns.
“I think it didn't really come into the match too much, which I'm happy with.”

Emma Raducanu's consistency paying off ahead of US Open third round
15:54 , Jamie BraidwoodEmma Raducanu’s 26 tour-level wins so far in 2025 is already her highest tally in a single season.
“I think all the practice I have been doing, it's been helping to get me to a certain level, and I want to keep doing it when it suits and when it fits and when it's the right time,” Raducanu said ahead of the third round.

Elena Rybakina finds form coming into US Open
15:49 , Jamie BraidwoodElena Rybakina is making her seventh appearance at the US Open and it is the only grand slam event where she has to reach the quarter-finals. The 26-year-old won Wimbledon in 2022, defeating Ons Jabeur in the final, then reached the 2023 Australian Open final.
This year, she reached three semi-finals at the hard-court North American swing, losing to the eventual finalist each time (Leylah Fernandez in Washington; Victoria Mboko in Montreal; and lga Swiatek in Cincinnati).
Her 41 wins on the tour this season are the third-most in the WTA, behind only Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
Cameron Norrie to take on Novak Djokovic in US Open night session
15:49 , Jamie BraidwoodCameron Norrie gets another crack at Novak Djokovic as the pair meet for a place in the US Open fourth round later tonight.
Norrie has lost all six matches he has played against the 24-time grand slam champion, including in the Wimbledon semi-finals in 2022 and in last year’s French Open last-16.
Norrie has won just two sets against Djokovic in those meetings, but the 38-year-old has looked vulnerable and out of form so far in New York, struggling past Zachary Svajda in the second round.
Djokovic said he is “frustrated” with how he is playing and if there was ever an opportunity for Norrie to get his first win over the Serbian, it would be now.

Coco Gauff fights through tears and struggling serve in US Open win
15:34 , Jamie BraidwoodCoco Gauff was in tears during and after her second-round US Open match but found a way through after seeking inspiration from Simone Biles in the crowd.
The former champion has been struggling with serving problems and is trying to change her action during the tournament with the help of biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan.
It is clearly putting a real strain on Gauff, who sat with her head in a towel after dropping serve at 4-4 in the first set of her clash with Donna Vekic, the TV cameras picking up the 21-year-old’s tear-stained face.

‘He knows what he’s doing’: Jacob Fearnley calls out Alexander Zverev after US Open loss
15:19 , Jamie BraidwoodJacob Fearnley called out Alexander Zverev’s tardiness after another defeat by the German at the US Open.
Fearnley took on the third seed for the third time this season having lost to him in Australia and Miami, and it was the same story as Zverev withstood a late salvo to claim a 6-4 6-4 6-4 victory.
British number three Fearnley revealed afterwards that Zverev had kept him waiting for more than 10 minutes before the players walked to Louis Armstrong Stadium, saying: “I kind of expected it.”

Racism storm overshadows US Open as Naomi Osaka joins criticism of Ostapenko’s ‘no education’ comment
15:04 , Jamie BraidwoodNaomi Osaka has joined the debate swirling around Jelena Ostapenko’s comments and courtside clash with Taylor Townsend as a racism storm descends on the US Open.
Ostapenko, who has rejected accusations of racism, hit out at American Townsend and accused her of having “no education” and “no class” following their second-round match, with the argument now on Wednesday now building into one of the most talked-about moments of the tournament, with world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka supporting the Latvian player.

Emma Raducanu details new goal before US Open showdown with Elena Rybakina
14:49 , Eleanor CrooksEmma Raducanu maintains a US Open title repeat is not on her mind and she is instead eyeing incremental improvements ahead of a titanic tussle with Elena Rybakina in the third round on Friday.
Raducanu told the PA news agency: “I think I’ve had some tough draws but that also comes with the ranking I’m at. I have to accept it, I’m not seeded.
“Playing these top opponents, you get a feel for it every time. It’s difficult. Right now I’m just working on developing and building my game.
“Of course, if I’m going to want to win a grand slam, you have to beat all the players in the draw, but I don’t think right now that’s my goal or my objective. I’m not trying to win the tournament, to be honest.”
Emma Raducanu discusses Elena Rybakina threat
14:34 , Jamie BraidwoodRaducanu and Rybakina have played each other just once before, with Rybakina winning 6-1 6-0 in Sydney back in 2022.
Raducanu and Rybakina have played doubles together as recently as the Cincinnati Open, where the pair won two matches and reached the semi-finals.
“I think she's a top opponent,” Raducanu said. “She's won Wimbledon. She's been at the top of the game for so long and very dominant and has big weapons, has a huge serve and big groundstrokes. So I do want to see how my game suits and fits against the top.
“I still think I have a long way to go, but I think I have been making steps towards getting closer and narrowing that gap. I think I have to take confidence from my matches against Aryna [Sabalenka] in Cincy and Wimby.
“But Elena is a different opponent. She beat Aryna in straight sets.”

Good afternoon
13:50 , Jamie BraidwoodEmma Raducanu faces her toughest test of the US Open so far as she takes on former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina in the third round.
Raducanu has been in sparkling form on her return to the US Open, the tournament she sensationally won in 2021, and has spent just over two hours on court in her rapid wins over qualifiers Ena Shibahara and Janice Tjen.
Rybakina, the ninth seed, is undoubtedly a step up in class and has found some form on the hard courts after reaching the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open, where she defeated World No 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the quarter-finals.
Raducanu has taken confidence from her two defeats to Sabalenka at Wimbledon and Cincinnati and is now curious to see how her game matches up against one of the best in the world as she bids for a return to the last-16.
