Emma Raducanu 'optimistic' of hiring coach before Australian Open as she confirms trials

Emma Raducanu has confirmed she has held trials with new coaches as she gets ready to compete at the Transylvania Open.

The teen is still seeking a new mentor after parting ways with Andrew Richardson soon after winning the US Open.

The British sensation is keen to recruit someone with added experience as she adjusts to her arduous life on the WTA Tour.

It had previously been reported that Raducanu had trained with Johanna Konta's former coach Esteban Carril.

And ahead of her opening match at the Transylvanian Open, Raducanu said: "I had a couple of trials this last week. I had a trial with Esteban. But I also had trials with others.

"I am feeling optimistic about trying to have something in place for the off-season and the Australian Open."

While she enjoys having someone to learn from, the world No 23 stressed the importance of being able to coach herself, especially with tennis being an individual sport.

"I don't think it's great to be dependant. You need to coach yourself. It's something I'm learning," she added.

"I think having a coach is great. But once again you are on your own on the court.

"Part of the experience I am having is being able to learn to coach myself.

"Sometimes it won't always work, like in Indian Wells, but in the long term if I keep doing that then I will be better in the situations in the future.”

Raducanu is set to begin her campaign at the Transylvania Open against Polona Hercog tomorrow.

This will be her first match since Aliaksandra Sasnovich defeated her at Indian Wells on her first return to competitive action since winning the US Open.

The tennis star’s father is Romanian and her grandmother lives in Bucharest.

She was given a warm welcome in Cluj-Napoca, where she spoke in Romanian to the limited crowd after a practice session.

The British number one added: "I love Romania. I used to come once or twice a year to visit my grandmother, who lives in Bucharest, while growing up. It is an hour's flight from here.

"The welcome I got was really, really nice and I always love coming back."
