Emma McQuaid proves her class once again with Irish National record

Lisburn's Emma McQuaid proved her class once again at the weekend by breaking the Irish Olympic Weightlifting Record.

McQuaid broke the national record for the Snatch and Clean and Jerk in the sub 71kg weight category.

She completed an 82kg Snatch and 104kg Clean & Jerk on Saturday at The Ulster Open Championships.

The 32-year-old finished first overall as she continues her preparation for next year's CrossFit Games 2023 season which starts in February.

McQuaid has represented Ireland four times over the last four years at The CrossFit Games, where she was crowned ‘The Fittest Woman in Ireland, 2022’, and at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

She competed at the Ulster Open Championships just seven days after returning from Austin, Texas (USA) where she took part in the ROGUE Invitational, a prestigious CrossFit competition.

“I’m delighted with this result," said Emma, who is originally from Newry and is also a former Premier Championship quad bike racer.

"The Rogue competition this year was one of the toughest events I’ve ever physically competed in and that's not great preparation for an Olympic weightlifting competition.

"To be able to turn around and execute on the platform following a week like that is amazing and I think bodes really well for the future.

"I hadn’t touched a barbell all week so it was either going to go well or it wasn’t!"
