Emiliano Sala: Probe into 'shameful' mocked-up boarding pass

Police are investigating after an image of a mocked-up boarding pass appearing to deride late Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala was shared online.

Sala was travelling from Nantes to Cardiff as part of a transfer deal when his plane disappeared off the coast near the Channel Islands in January 21.

The 28-year-old's body was eventually recovered from the wreckage of the flight on February 7.

In the image described as "disgraceful" by Swansea City, the mocked-up boarding pass - which features Swansea's name - has the flight number "D3AD" and the pilot is named as Mikey Dye, a Cardiff fan who died after an attack outside Wembley in 2011.

Swansea is set to play Cardiff on Sunday.

South Wales Police said in a statement on Saturday: “South Wales Police is aware and have reviewed an image on social media relating to Emiliano Sala and we are investigating in relation to an offence under the Malicious Communications Act.

“We will be working closely with both Swansea City and Cardiff City football clubs to identify the source.

“We would remind people not to share the image as they may be committing an offence.”

Swansea City also said last night: "Swansea City is aware of the disgraceful image currently circulating on social media ahead of Sunday's South Wales derby in relation to the sad death of Cardiff City striker Emiliano Sala.

"We are working closely with South Wales Police who will be conducting an investigation to identify the initial source.

"The image is shameful and does not represent this football club or our supporters in any way."
