Emergency services rescue 14-year-old boy stuck 40ft up cliff face in Sunderland

A teenager had to be rescued by emergency services after getting stuck up a cliff in Sunderland.

Members of Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade were called to Ford Quarry just before 8pm on Tuesday.

A 14-year-old boy had attempted to climb the cliff face and got stuck 40 feet up.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched two Hazardous Area Response Teams to the scene, while Northumbria Police officers also attended.

An immediate rope rescue was carried out by the Coastguard who were able to secure the teenager in a rescue strop before lowering him to safety.

The boy did not sustain any injuries as a result of the incident.

A Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team spokesman said: "We were called to Ford Quarry in Sunderland where a 14-year-old boy was stuck 40 feet up the cliff face in the Quarry.

"On arrival, Coastguard officers setup for an immediate rope rescue and lowered one of our rope rescue technicians to the casualty who secured the casualty in our rescue strop and lowered him to safety.

"He was checked over by ambulance crews and handed into police care."

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "Shortly before 7.45pm yesterday (Tuesday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a teenage boy who had climbed up the cliff face at the Ford Quarry in Sunderland and got stuck.
